Make-Up of the 1980's by Melissa

Unlike the 1970's, the 1980's had a more bazaar type of fashion. From the mini-skirts to the parachute pants. But enough about the clothing, what were some of the hottest celebrities of that time wearing on their faces? Well in the 1980's it was all about the cheeks and the eyes. Many people say that this was the era where many women literally "painted" their faces on. There were two elements of facial cosmetics in the 80's. One was bold eyes and the other was the accelerated cheek bone. The more noticeable your eyes were, the better you looked. Eye shadow was huge in the 80's as well. And it came in several different colors. But the one color most noticable with the era was the electric blue. Not to mention that eyeliner was also in heavy usage in this time. Many women say they would pull at their eyes to get them all the way down, so they can get that teal eyeliner rockin with that blue eye Shadow.

To sum everything up, the average make-up bag in the 80's had the paste like tube of cover-up, a bottle of heavy foundation, eye shadow, in a variety of colors, etc. And several years after that fashion has gone away, it is slowly making a come back. To the right, you will see contestant Heather in the 2007 hit show "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels".

I do remember in 6th grade, I had numerous pairs of Z. Cavericci pants, otherwise known as the MC Hammer pants. Actually, my 6th grade teacher was a fan also of the MC Hammer pants, and reebok pump sneakers. I'm not sure what a public reaction to wearing those type of pants would be, but I know one thing for sure, if I ever see someone wearing them, I will be quick to buy them again.

Having been born in the magical year of 1980, I got witness a lot of this fashion from a child's eyes, as well as looking up to my second oldest cousin, who was the main influence in my musical taste.
The picture of the contestant from "Rock of Love" is definitely stereotypical of the '80s look, although it is mild by what was usually seen. Both men and women wore high hair, and heavy cosmetics. The men were typically the musicians, or fans trying to look like the musicians, while the women looked like the women in the music videos, a medium that was gaining massive amounts of popularity at the time.

The 80's were pretty crazy when it came to the make up and hair styles. It shows that the technology of the cosmetics that were being released had advanced to where they could layer the make up. This became socially acceptable to have a "caked" look on their face. But even looking back at the styles from the 80's to today's styles, they may seem ridiculous to some people, but they are often seen as a piece of art work to other peoples eyes.

The 80's era was definitely good times for me. I was a teenager. I wore all the make-up and my hair was about 3 feet high. Everyone dressed like that, so it was not normal not to look that way. I would definitely say the hairspray used in the 80's was made special, because it could make your hair stand up and not move for hours. The make-up on the other hand, did not last as long and waterproof make-up was still pretty new.
